Make A Paper Lolly Bag: Eco-Friendly Alternatives
There is absolutely no need to buy plastic lolly bags.
A much better alternative for the environment is to make lolly bags from greaseproof paper or baking paper. Both of these are common kitchen items, with generic products doing as good a job as expensive brands.
This method is also useful for packing fruit and nut mixes, fresh berries, popcorn, and even small toys.
Supplies
Food grade eco-friendly suggestions include:
- Greaseproof paper
- Baking paper
- Craft paper
- Sticky tape, if possible use plastic free Washi tape
You’ll also need something to tie it up with. You could use:
- Natural jute twine
- Butcher’s 100% cotton twine
- Ribbon, keep reusing for other gifts
- Raffia, plant based
- Wool
Steps

Cut out a square of greaseproof paper or baking paper.
Find the middle of the bottom of the square.

With your finger at the centre point, begin winding the paper to form a cone shape.

Keep winding until the cone is complete.
Place a small amount of sticky tape to seal the edge. Washi tape is a good plastic free option.

Fill the cone with your preferred choice of food.

Twist the paper at the top of the cone and use an eco-friendly tie.
That’s it – you’re done!
This is a fantastic alternative to plastic lolly bags!

Newspaper is a good option for non-food related items.
